After picking up another Premier League title, Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has confirmed he'll retire from the game, according to BBC Sport:
The midfielder was quoted via United's official website as saying that it's been an "honour" to play for United "under the greatest manager of all time":
Yes, I am finally hanging up my boots for good! Playing football is all I have ever wanted to do, and so to have had such a long and successful career at Manchester United, under the greatest manager of all time, has been an honour. The team has the right balance and will continue to thrive under the leadership of David Moyes.
Ferguson was also quick in his praise of Scholes, calling him a "truly unbelievable player" and stating that it had been a "real privilege to work with him for so many years." He also confirmed that the England international will play on Sunday in his last home game against Swansea City.
Scholes had already retired once from the English competition at the end of the 2010-11 season, but he was talked back into a return by manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who also announced his retirement at the end of this year. And whilst United would not go on to win the league trophy that season, Scholes' determination and commitment to the game showed that he still had plenty left to give to the Red Devils.
The 38-year-old didn't play as strong a role in this year's title success as he did in previous seasons, but having played at the club across three decades and amassed various trophies in both England and abroad, there's little doubting Scholes' claim to be one of the true great midfielders in history.
Scholes will finish with over 700 club appearances to his name—the third most in club history—and won the second highest number of trophies as well.
He won 11 Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two Champions League trophies in his illustrious career at Old Trafford. He was named into the Premier League's Team of the Decade in 2002 and inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.
ESPN reports that Scholes may take up a coaching role alongside new manager David Moyes next season, but no official information is yet known.
